Why DIY?

DIY work can be highly satisfying and is becoming increasingly popular in the UK. That is not to say that it is all fun and joy! DIY work can get time consuming, and there is room for things to go wrong if one is not properly informed. However, in the end, one is no doubt, left with a feeling of pride and ownership.

DIY basically means doing it yourself, without the help of professionals. It can be anything from building, modifying to repairing or renovating. Taking an involvement in maintaining, building and keeping your belongings and your home in good and working condition is DIY!

It is ironic that something that was the norm in the past, went out of fashion with the age when we had to rely on experts for such work, and has now resurfaced in our culture. As more and more people become interested in DIY, it becomes easier and more convenient. Everything from tools, fasteners to Air Compressors are now widely available.

The range of DIY is very wide and the degree of interest in DIY work can be varying. While some people may like to do small jobs around the house, some might go so far as painting, skirting etc. Many DIY enthusiasts build entire rooms and floors on their own without the help of experts.

DIY also has a political and cultural connotation to it. We live in the age of mass production and multinational corporations. In this light, DIY encompasses not only home improvement, but our transport choices, growing our own food, making objects, art, and craft.
