The DIY Ethic
There is a code of conduct among people who enjoy DIY work. The DIY ethic involves completing your job without involving a professional. This means figuring out several things relying on your own common sense and finally not only completing the task at hand, but completing it well.
DIY usually refers to doing some renovation work, or maintenance work in your home. Say building some furniture, or fixing the pest problem on your own, instead of typing Teignmouth Pest Control and hiring the first company you see listed there!
However, there is a broader connotation to the term DIY. As you can imagine, the ethic of do it yourself can be applied to any activity. Especially in the context of the present world that is heavy on consumerism, DIY has a slight counter culture vibe to it. It entails finding out information and knowledge on your own using al the open source knowledge that there is available.
Once upon a time, there was no such thing as DIY, as repairing, reusing, and maintaining your things on your own was the norm. Things changed however, and every service became available, all consumers had to do was buy products and services.
There is a kind of joy and pride that comes with completing a DIY task. When you know that you have relied entirely on your own faculties and resources to get a job done. The DIY culture continues to become more and more popular.
